WRITING AND EDITING

Behind every successful researcher, there may possibly be a good editor! For any researcher, a competent medical editor can simplify workload, and increase the chances that an academic paper or grant will be accepted. Whether you hire an editor for a one-time grant review, or choose to hire a full-time editor for your staff, a good medical editor can enhance your chances of career success. You can often fund an editor from your grant monies or academic discretionary funds (ask us how!). By handing off the more tedious and administrative tasks involved in grant or manuscript submission to an editor, a researcher at any level (junior or senior) can save valuable time and can focus on being successful in research and clinical work.

Medical and Scientific Grant Editing

Loon Lake can help edit your grant prior to submission to national grant agencies or foundations. Our experience in editing the research sections of medical R01 grant applications furthers your goal of increasing the grant's impact and maximizing its score and chance of acceptance. We edit for grammar, style, consistency of data and text and figures/tables, and check that the writing level is matched to the intended grant reviewer's specialty, if known. With grants, it may be helpful to determine, if possible, who your reviewer will be, and tailor the grant to them, to enhance chances of careful review and acceptance. Obtaining enough funding to focus on your research can become a reality, if you follow our proven methods; we've been trained by researchers who have been grant-funded for years, and have copied their most successful habits!

Medical Manuscript Writing and Editing

We help edit your manuscripts prior to submission to scientific or medical peer-reviewed journals. Our ability to take raw data from research and create a first draft article is especially helpful for researchers who complete projects and just can't bring themselves to write that first draft. If you already have a draft, we can edit for grammar, style, consistency of data and text and figures/tables, and can check that the writing level is matched to the intended audience's knowledge. Our ability to offload administrative tasks, such as writing cover letters to journal editors, preparing and submitting the manuscript via the web, collecting and FAXing author signatures, etc., allows you to focus on your research.

A basic checklist we follow for papers and grants is shown below.

  • Edit for style, grammar, clarity, organization, and professionalism.
  • Help you frame content at the right level to suit the intended audience - a professional journal, national foundation, grant agency, etc.
  • Review charts and data for format and accuracy (we do not at this time do statistical analysis, but can check the results done by statisticians against your text and for accuracy).
  • Combine written text, images, charts and graphics and other media into a clean and appealing design, and flag any errors/inconsistencies.
  • Edit/crop/resize images as needed into journal-specific format.
  • Prepare manuscripts in journal-specific format.
  • Handle correspondence with journal staff as needed.
  • Submit manuscripts and grants online.
  • Assist in resubmission of manuscripts and grants.
  • Assist in changes to papers accepted conditionally pending changes.

Content Writing (for brochures, websites, etc.)

Loon Lake Design will write and edit marketing or research reports, brochures, business plans, project plans, technical manuals, specifications, etc. We can write content for your website, or for an audio or videotape. In the past several years Loon Lake Design has completed writing and editing projects for clients in industry and academia, for print media publications, educational videos and commercial websites. Our specialty areas are science, medicine and high technology, but we can write professionally on any topic. (So if you needed content about, for example, nascar racing or fashion design - we could likely handle that, too!)
